One of the main trends in the modern society development is the environment protection. The problem of environmental safety is a topical issue for the large city, where from 60% to 80% of harmful emissions is the result of transport and communal service utilities` work. The article analyzes the environmental situation of the North-Western region of the Russian Federation, and considers the problem of the environmental safety when using special transport in urban agglomeration, as well as the ways of improving the situation. Another measure of increasing the level of environmental safety of the North-Western region during the operation of special vehicles, in the opinion of the authors, would be converting gasoline and diesel internal combustion engines to alternative gas engine fuel, namely, natural gas, propane-butane and hydrogen.
