The influence of natural aging on the strength properties of belite sludge for road construction

Annotation: 

There has been carried out an analysis to determine the impact of natural aging of belite (nepheline) sludge on the suitability of the sludge as a material for road pavement layering. The study has identified the following pattern: when slurry is stored in a waste heap, the material undergoes carbonization, which is quantified by an increase in the loss on ignition (LOI) of up to 23 %, which leads to a reduction in the strength of experimental samples. It is noted that the currently valid classification in the Industry Road Methodological Document (IRMD 218.3.043-2015) does not fully account for this dynamics, which creates a potential risk of overestimating design characteristics when developing multilayer road structures. The results of the study, including the proposed correlation dependencies, provide a scientific basis for refining the regulatory framework in terms of assigning characteristics to materials taking into account their shelf life and may be considered the basis for developing an operational criterion for monitoring their quality based on the loss on ignition indicator (the need to take into account the kinetics of aging of nepheline sludge).
