The contribution of Russian and foreign scientists to the creation of the calculation theory and practice of introducing prestressed structural metal structures into objects under construction until the end of the XX century is described. Based on an analysis of publications in journals of leading research, design institutes in Russia, it is concluded that theoretical and practical developments in prestressed metal building structures in Russia were reduced in the late XX - early XXI centuries. An example of the effectiveness of using these structures in extreme regions of Siberia and the Russian Far East is given. It is shown that the use of such structures can solve the main technical and economic problem of construction, namely, increasing the bearing capacity of designs of buildings and structures while reducing their weight and cost.
