In hydrodynamic flows, the second (quadratic) and third (cubic) invariants of the strain rate tensor generate waves. They are the stimuli of vibrations. The second and third invariants of the strain rate tensor can also generate waves in an elastic solid. The article contains the equations of motion in displacements of S. P. Timoshenko and J. N. Goodier. The solution of these equations makesit possible to calculate the intensity of vibrations if the second and third invariants of the strain tensor are taken into account. Strong vibrations are dangerous for the building They can lead to the building collapse.
