The main features of classical methods of structural mechanics for calculation of statically indeterminable rod systems are considered. The formulations of the finite element method in the form of the displacement method and the force method are presented. The advantages and disadvantages of two forms of finite element method are revealed, including those in the elastic-plastic calculation of rod systems. The distinctive features and advantages of discrete analytical methods in the calculation of core systems are shown.
